SWCCs Share Boarding Tactics with Fleet Sailors

NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- U.S. Navy Special Warfare Combatant-craft Crewmen (SWCC) from Special Boat Team (SBT) 20 gave Sailors from USS Peleliu (LHA 5) and USS Dubuque (LPD 8) a three-week training course focusing on visit, board, search and seizure (VBSS) tactics Nov. 2-24 on Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek

VBSS is the term for maritime boarding actions designed to capture enemy vessels to combat terrorism, piracy and to conduct customs, safety and other inspections. This particular course, facilitated by the special warfare boat operators, consisted of basic small boat navigation, basic engineering, and basic craft boarding.

Navy Lawyers Receive Real-World Training with Operation Tomodachi

U.S. 7th Fleet gathered a host of attorneys to fill the gap during Operation Tomodachi, the large-scale disaster relief operation to support Japan following the earthquake, tsunami and subsequent nuclear accident on March 11.  

The moment he knew that 7th Fleet was going into a real-world operations, Cmdr. Christopher French, 7th Fleet’s Fleet Judge Advocate reached out for support from the Judge Advocate General (JAG) community – and support arrived – immediately.

Joint Exercise Provides Partner Nations with Valuable Maritime and Ground-based Skills

JOHN C. STENNIS SPACE CENTER, Miss. (NNS) -- Naval Small Craft Instruction and Technical Training School (NAVSCIATTS) and the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHINSEC) conducted a joint field training exercise March 1-5 at John C. Stennis Space Center, Miss.

This training was the third time NAVSCIATTS and WHINSEC have worked together in a combined effort, bringing together military and law enforcement representatives from 19 nations from North, Central and South America, the Caribbean, Europe and Africa with a common objective of enhancing skills and proficiency to assure operational success.

It is a mindset unfamiliar to most; a level of training and ability that enables someone to react immediately to a crisis. A mindset that at times, appears to supersede logic. To react almost without thinking, allowing one’s self to rise above mental and physical limitations is the ultimate goal of a Special Warfare Combatant-craft Crewman (SWCC). When a SWCC takes to the water on a mission, he is at that level. These young sailors make decisions with an increased level of responsibility daily. They are the maritime experts of today.

SWCC Complete Parachute Egress Course

NORFOLK, Va. -- (NNS) -- U.S. Navy Special Warfare Combatant-craft Crewmen (SWCC) from Special Boat Team (SBT) 20 tested their stamina and water proficiency after the one-week Parachute Egress (Para-Egress) course at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek Feb 5.
 
"The evolution we did today is the water competency evaluation; it's a compilation of everything we've taught the students throughout the week," said Senior Chief Special Warfare Boat Operator Jeff Smith, Para-Egress course instructor for SBT-20. "It's designed to be challenging, to test guys in the worst possible controlled environment that we can replicate, testing their physical and mental aptitude to be able to handle themselves in any situation that they may find themselves in."
